The Missouri Driver License — Missouri Driver's License Practice Test

This section explains who needs a Missouri driver license and how you earn one. Anyone who lives in Missouri, is 16 or older, and plans to drive must hold a valid Missouri license, and a new resident must get one even if they already hold a valid license from another state. You must carry your license when you drive and show it to any law enforcement officer who asks.

Young drivers move through Missouri's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, which applies to drivers age 15 to 21. It has three steps: the Instruction Permit (eligible age 15), the Intermediate License (Class F, eligible age 16), and the Full Driver License (Class F, eligible age 18). To reach a full license, a first-time driver under 18 must first hold an instruction permit and then an intermediate license.

To apply for a new license or permit, you must show proof of lawful status, identity with your full legal name, your Social Security number, and Missouri residency. A driver license may be valid for up to six years, and the Department mails a reminder before it expires; you may renew up to six months before expiration. You can also lose your driving privilege — for example, for driving under the influence, refusing a chemical test, or accumulating too many points, which can lead to a suspension or revocation.
