Renewing, Amending, or Replacing a Credential — Indiana Driver's License Practice Test

This section covers renewing, amending, and replacing your credential. You may renew or replace a credential online at myBMV.com if your name and residential address are unchanged, and online or kiosk renewal is allowed every other renewal.

Timing and testing depend on how long a license has been expired. Renewing a credential after its expiration date results in an administrative penalty. A license expired at least 180 days but not more than five years requires paying a penalty and passing a knowledge exam and a vision screening, while a license expired five years or more also requires a driving skills exam.

Amending a credential has deadlines. You must notify the BMV and apply for an amended credential within 30 days of a legal address change. For a name change, update your name at the Social Security Administration first, wait at least one business day, then amend at a BMV branch within 30 days. A lost or stolen credential may be replaced online a maximum of 10 times before a branch visit is required.
