The Testing Process — California Driver's License Practice Test

This chapter covers the three parts of getting tested: a vision test, a written knowledge test, and (for a first license) a behind-the-wheel drive test. Each has its own pass conditions and rules about retaking it if you don't pass the first time.

The most-tested ideas are what's prohibited during the knowledge test (no handbooks, notes, or phones), and the vehicle safety inspection the examiner performs before the drive test — items like working lights, mirrors, tires, brakes, turn signals, and a horn all have to check out before the test even starts. Minors also face specific waiting periods before retaking either the knowledge test or the drive test after a failure.

A common mistake is showing up for the drive test in a vehicle that fails the safety inspection, or assuming driver-assist technology (automatic parking, lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control) can be used during the test — it can't. A backup camera or blind-spot monitor may be present, but you still must physically check mirrors and blind spots yourself.
