🔴 A near-minimum-wage, low-ceiling job — pay tracks the local minimum wage almost everywhere. National median $15.00/hr; the bottom tenth is $10.98/hr and even the top tenth only $20.51/hr, so there is essentially no high-paying long tail. The federal minimum is $7.25/hr (unchanged since 2009) and about 20 states still sit at $7.25, while 19 states raised their minimum on Jan 1, 2026 (highest: DC $17.95, Washington $17.13, NYC-area $17.00). 🔴 The one big exception: since April 1, 2024, California sets a $20.00/hr sectoral minimum wage for fast-food workers at chains with 60+ US locations. As of July 2026 it is still $20 — a state Fast Food Council may raise it (up to 3.5% or CPI a year) but hasn't yet, so state it as 'since 2024, may rise later,' NOT as already increased. Everywhere else, verify your current state/city minimum wage (they change every Jan 1).
  • 🔴 Being paid in cash — the honest version in one line: receiving cash is legal; not reporting it is illegal. Cash you report on your tax return is lawful income like any other. What cash pay usually costs you is the paper trail: without a W-2 or pay stubs you typically build no Social Security credit, have no unemployment claim, often have no workers' compensation coverage if you are hurt on the job, and hold no income record — and that missing record is exactly what a bank asks for when you apply for credit or a lease, and what immigration paperwork asks for when you have to document work or support. Workers' compensation is state law, not federal: the U.S. Department of Labor sends workers injured at private companies to their state workers' compensation board, and the rules and exemptions vary by state. A W-2 job is the side of the line the system was built for — 1099/gig work sits outside it entirely — but that alone does not mean your employer carries it. In Texas, for example, private employers can choose whether to carry workers' comp at all: it is not required in most cases, and an employer without it is called a 'non-subscriber' (Texas Department of Insurance). So ask your employer whether they carry workers' compensation, and look up your state's board. An on-the-job injury (a fryer or grill burn, a slip on a greasy floor, a cut) is covered if your employer carries workers' compensation. Fast-food crew has a real internal ladder: crew → crew trainer → shift manager → assistant manager → general manager, mostly through internal promotion and brand training (e.g. McDonald's Hamburger University / Archways to Opportunity) — there is no single external exam for those roles. The one studyable credential on the ladder is the Food Protection Manager exam (`food-manager`, e.g. a ServSafe Manager-type certification): stores need a certified food-safety manager on staff, and passing it positions you for the shift-lead/manager tier. Some counties also want an entry-level food handler card first. None are needed to start as crew. Compare crew against a restaurant server (tipped front-of-house) or a food prep worker (steadier hourly, less customer contact) before choosing.
